For those who are interested in challenging themselves with some longer distances, have a look at the Marathon Skating Internation schedule. Race distances are 25km and 40km, typically on well-maintained outdoor ovals.
To skate on the oval, you need determine when the "C Hour" is heldm (see below), arrive early to sign up at the desk and fill in a form (one time). Have your Speed Skate Canada number with you. The cost is $15.00 per session. They have rental speed skates available.
The Calgary Oval number is 403-220-7890 to talk to an actual person. The automated info line is 403-220-7954. You want to ask about the “C” Hour (the Club hour). They post the times on a week by week basis. When Kathy was there in September 2010, the times for that week were Monday 8.30 to 10.00 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 6.30 to 8.00 pm; times vary based on other scheduled events.
